YNP Wildlife Biology comic book

This illustrated guide to wildlife biology in Yellowstone shares my own personal experience working in the park while educating the reader on skills used by the field technicians of the park and what they study. This project demonstrates the first chapter of the comic as a proposal for the whole book. The goal of this book was to illustrate the work of Yellowstone’s biologists in a way that would appeal to readers from all ages and cultures.

creating for an audience

The intended audience for this project was one aspect i wanted to highlight. Not only was the comic created for the younger park visitors, but the tourists from all across the globe were put in mind as well. I took it upon myself to create a few covers in different languages as an example of what the book might look like when printed for the non english speaking visitors.

process

There are a few steps in making a comic like this one, so here’s a brief walkthrough. To begin, I start by making a rough storyboard sketch to decide how everything will fit together. next I place the panels on top and go over the sketches in procreate to make the line art. After that, I color everything in starting with foreground and figures and then adding the background. Once the color is finished, I go in and create a light source by adding shadows and highlights to bring the drawings to life. Finally, I bring the artwork into indesign to create appropriate text bubbles for the dialogue!
